A natural geological fault line which splits Scotland from Fort William to Inverness. The Great Glen with its fresh water lochs and spectacular mountain scenery were developed by the northern part of the Caledonian mountain slide some 60 miles to the south. Taking advantage of this natural wonder Thomas Telford developed the impressive Caledonian Canal, taking 20 years to complete in 1822. Telford’s canal was the first in Britain to link coast to coast with ships carrying up to 500 tons. |
